Funny story. It’s likely I’m related to him based on DNA analysis. Way way too far back to be sure, but I have links to a few people buried in that area and strong ties to indigenous European groups pre-Roman Conquest, the groups that made it their mission to fuck with Rome, and like…every Viking settlement after that.
European archaeology is unforgivably whitewashed. Learning about my own heritage pissed me off because so much effort has been put into rewriting it. It is actually one of the reasons I wrote my Inequality article. I couldn’t find much that wasn’t either erased or steamrolled by white supremacist narrative.
(Not to mention the dudes who use Viking heritage as evidence of racial purity when Vikings weren’t even an ethnic group and were actually really diverse.)
