I have no bones to pick with ghostwriting in and of itself. I’m an editor and I edit for a few independent publishers who publish ghostwriters. Many are writers who don’t have the time to write but want to publish their ideas.
But the risk adversity is the core of the issue. A writing position I interviewed for told me “people don’t want to learn. They just want to get lost in a story" and didn’t like any of the ideas I had that pushed the safety net a bit. And I’m not someone who disregards criticism of my own work. Like anything that improves it is fine by me, but I mean…anything that didn’t fit in the designated box that only fit what’s currently trending, I was asked to cut.
When every writing decision is based on marketability, you lose originality.
